Passage

Passage

Passage was a group formed by Louis Johnson, who was one half of the successful group, Brothers Johnson. It was comprised of Louis, his then wife Valerie Johnson, and Richard Heath, previously a Brothers Johnson percussionist/singer. Their self-titled and only album (A&M Records, 1981) was easily one of the first urban gospel projects of its kind.

It spawned a number of catchy danceable tracks including “Power”, a solid cut with all the authentic disco funk of the time, but with gospel lyrics. It talks about the power available to us as believers. “Have You Heard The Word” with lead vocals from Valerie Johnson, showcases the talent that lent itself to the success of Brothers Johnson. Its message is that the Lord will never leave us and it includes an excellent bass solo from Louis.

“I See The Light’ is another great track with an uplifting vibe lyrically and musically. The album also includes a reworking of “Faith Working People” made famous by Amy Grant.

Overall, the album is a credit to Louis Johnson and would excite anyone who appreciates music from the early 80s.
